Greater Boston Food Bank

GBFB has acknowledged that COVID-19 has led to a rise in food insecurity for communities throughout greater Boston. Food banks were deemed essential service providers and continued to operate during the pandemic. GBFB has continued to operate but does not have any specific programming that relates to COVID-19 relief efforts.

With partnerships that include foundations, corporations, and organizations, GBFB network is reinforced to provide healthy food options in order to prevent the development of chronic diseases. Built upon a research-based approach, GBFB looks towards nutritional education to combat health disparities faced by communities that do not have equal access to nutrition and healthy foods. The Greater Boston Food Bank operates within 190 towns and cities across Eastern Massachusetts and helps over 140,000 people receive food monthly. GBFB ensures that they are intentionally helping people by providing nutritious and healthy food options for the community it serves. GBFB understands that simply providing food is not enough, and ensures that they are also supplying quality food.

The GBFB has been around since 1990. Over the past few years the organization has raised between $80-$90 million in revenue. They do use a substantial portion of this budget on services, and their operating margin fluctuates close to $0 (some years slightly negative, some years slightly positive). Their executive team is built out, and several members including the CEO have been with the organization for several years. They have a strong board structure with ambassadors, young professionals boards, etc.

GBFB is managed as an education-based non-profit with guiding principles to improve the health of community members with nutritional and healthy food. As a member of Feeding America, the national coalition of nonprofit organizations around GBFB ensures that the organization is able to provide holistic services that align with the mission of the nonprofit.
